Every year the ROTC here on campus has a formal called the military
ball.  Although I already asked somebody to go, and this might not be the
most tactful thing to do, I think she might say no (strong possibility)
and if she does would you like to go?   I promise to behave (if you do),
I will not wipe my mouth with the tablecloth, and promise to maintain
witty and slightly intelligent dinner conversation.

I will formally ask you when I get this other girl's answer.

Oh, yes.  You will be expected to look ravishing and smile alot, and perhaps
supply a goodnight kiss.
