Desirable features are speed of compilation and low cost (on the order of Turbo Pascal). Efficient code generation and support for the full language are less important. It is desirable, however, that the compiler support the passing of arrays with variable dimensions. That's a standard FORTRAN feature we were disappointed to see missing in the UCSD p-system versions. (Their FORTRAN is rather buggy in general, by the way.)
