I haven't made such an argument.  By pointing out that is not considered
sick in some other societies, I was hoping to raise the argument above
knee-jerk reactions.

Evidently I was wrong about the knee-jerk reactions.

Once again, I haven't made the argument that "because they've done it,
we should do it."  We COULD do it.  To decide to do this would require
examination of its effects.
