Message-ID: <110@mcrware.UUCP> Date: Thu, 21-Feb-85 11:12:22 EST Article-I.D.: mcrware.110 Posted: Thu Feb 21 11:12:22 1985 Date-Received: Sun, 24-Feb-85 02:39:49 EST Distribution: net Organization: Microware Systems Corp., Des Moines, IA Lines: 44 Xref: linus net.micro.6809:403 net.micro.68k:524 ["Give it to Mikey, he'll eat anything!!!"] There have been numerous questions on the net recently concerning OS-9 and Microware. Here's a brief summary about what OS-9 and Microware are about. OS-9 is a real-time, multiuser, multitasking UNIX-like operating system designed for use with the Motorola 6809 and 68000 family of microprocessors. The intent of OS-9 is to provide a UNIX-like environment in applications where UNIX is impractical because of size, expensive hardware requirements, and execution speed. The OS-9 kernel is written in native assembly language for compact size and fast execution speed. Fully configured, the OS-9 operating system requires around 24K of memory. OS-9 is also completely ROM-able, allowing it to be used for many applications that UNIX can't touch. Microware provides a variety of languages for use with OS-9. These languages include: C (of course), BASIC, Pascal, FORTRAN, and macro assemblers for the various processors. The versions of C include numerous cross- compilers to allow compilation on a host machine for downloading to a 68000 machine. Not all compilers are currently available for the 6809 and 68000 machines.
