I saw it in Denmark Yes, I saw this film around 5 years ago here in LA. At that time, it was shown with English subtitles. The reason that you gave the film high marks in direction is that it was made by Kurosawa (Samarai trilogy, etc.) This film was a joint effort from Japan and Russia which was unusual in consideration of the long standing enmity of these 2 nations toward each other.
