The Academy plays on period instruments from which they coax the most delightfully transparent, yet very colorful, sound. The string timbre of this ensemble is glorious -- right up there with that of the Concentus Musicus of Vienna. My only criticism is that the Messrs. Hogwood and Schroeder use an ensemble a little larger than I might like ( especially for an 'original instrument' performance ), and that the music looses a little of the intimacy it might have if the ensemble were smaller.
