As was pointed out in another article, Kirk has often avoided charges with little more than hand-waving --- Restrictions Talos 4 suspended this occasion Amok Time -- in view of importance of T'pau Mark of Gideon (both Kirk and Spock risked diplomatic incident & Spock disobeyed a direct order) and numerous times when Kirk "freely interpreted the prime directive. I think they may handwave again in STIV cuz why bother with complicated excuses that won't satisfy everyone anyway ?! ellen bart
