The Hawaii tourist office has a very nice booklet with a listing of all
accommodations which meet their standards, their prices, facilities, and
location.  Many of these places have toll-free phone numbers.  We made
all of our own reservations in Hawaii with great success.  Waikiki is one
of the cheapest places in the world to vacation ONCE YOU GET THERE.  We
got a very inexpensive room at the Waikiki Surf East.  We chose it because
it had free self-parking.  You could choose one with courtesy shuttle
service.  The Hawaii tourist office is in the NYC phone book and should
have office(s) on the west coast.

We used the AAA travel book.  We enjoyed diamond head, Pearl Harbor, and
the Polynesian Cultural center most.  The first two are close to public
transportation which is easy to use.  The last is expensive and part
of a bus trip, but we enjoyed it thoroughly.  They have recreations of
all the cultures of Polynesian with authentic islanders who are attending
BYU Hawaii Campus.  While in Waikiki you will want to browse the many
junk and souvenir shops.
