Early USENIX meetings were held in small lecture rooms where programmers would discuss how to fix the tape driver or how to arrange for system manuals to be printed. The technical program was often constructed in real-time, and proceedings were published after the confer- ences. In keeping with the consistently improving technical tradition of USENIX conferences, the Portland proceedings will be available at the conference, and for the first time selected conference papers will be reviewed by Software Practice and Experience for a special edition later in the year. As usual papers as well as panel or workshop sessions are solicited on any technical aspect of the UNIX operating system and related areas such as compilers and languages, networks, distributed computation, and software tools. In addition contributions are solicited in the following spe- cial areas: programming environments, e.g. ADA user interfaces, e.g. windows and interactive debuggers multiprocessing hardware and software techniques new architectures, e.g. RISC interactive graphics experiences with system distribution and release evolutionary and perspective points of view standards activities The conference publication schedule is as follows: abstracts due: March 18 notification of acceptance: April 3 camera-ready copy due: May 10 Abstracts should be at least 1000 words, or 1-2 pages in length, and convey the sense of the final paper.
