I ended up recommending the following system based on my own listening and other experience and a certain amount of faith. AR-98LS speakers Sony STRVX-750 receiver Technics SLJ2 turntable Shure V15-V (P type) cartridge Sony TCK-555 cassette deck Sony CDP-102 CD player Total cost about $1700 plus shipping (and Monster Cable or eqyuivalent, of course :-)) Interestingly, these people are considering not getting the turntable/cart. as inspection showed that they only had about 30 records playable after sharing with their kids for some years.
