The UUUUUUUUUUUUUUU sequence is usually a symptom of 212 modems
entering their self-test mode.  Once this happens (it is a modem
problem, not a uucp problem) it can put the connection into a state
from which normal recovery can be very difficult.  It is always best
to set the switches on your modems to DISABLE "remote self test"
to avoid exactly this sort of problem.
