Not that anyone could possibly know everything about anything, but I just saw some sniveling public official on C-SPAN this morning whining and complaining about the "Star Wars" defence programme. Lucky me, on the way to work, some House of Lords chap was bitchin' about the same thing. Now, I don't want to pass judgement yea or nay on using whatever means to disable nuclear weapons in flight, but I AM SICK AND TIRED of a bunch of people with narrowly defined skills of relatively no technical sophistication making public policy. We've got guys fighting passionately on both sides of the House almost every day over this issue (and many others), and I'll bet you that there might be 3 people in there who could bias a transistor for class A operation. Then there is this article in Buisness Week quoting an official from Big Blue stating something like "we would have to go to fibre optics to overcome the component interconnection time problem" or something like that, in reference to ballistic transistors. And now, the 100 gHz O.O.K. diodes and phototransistors, please....(The remark actually looks much more stupid in print.) Since it is the nonconformists, wild ducks, reformed ex-drug crazed hippies, etc. that get things done around here, it is high time they had some input into the aforementioned problem. Although informing the unwashed masses is a) a threat to job security and b) directly contrary to why one becomes a wild duck in the first place; eventually, mutual survival rather than corporate survival will hinge on information provided to those guys in "Special Orders" saying that something "won't work." What an way to open duck season....... This doesn't mean that everyone should go around deriving the expression describing carrier lifetime in a photoconductor on demand. It's just that the national anxiety index would go down dramatically if there was a modicum of scientific education. At least enough education, so that, a non-techie could recognise a Good Thing when they have it...... ----------- I am. Therefore, I'll think. --Ayn Rand dya
