If you read it you wasted it. The laughter is all the monsters laughing at you. What you do is drop the scroll and then MOVE onto it (using the M(ove) command.) If you play a version of rogue without a move command all you can do is drop it, When you try to pick it up again it will turn to dust. You can identify the scroll by trying to have a monster step on it before you pick it up. If the monster steps on the scroll it is NOT a scare, if the monster will not step on the scroll it is a scare monster. If you find a scare this way you get to use it, pick it up, and use it again.
