"Pooh-pooh," "ding-dong" and "bow-wow" are the commonly accepted names for three centuries-old theories of the origin of language (all commonly discredited, but of historical interest). Almost any introductory linguistics textbook will tell you; I'm fond of Dwight Bolinger's _Aspects of Language_ (a good read for anyone curious about natural language). Sorry the tone is so serious here; guess I've been awake too long. -- ellen keyne seebacher ...ihnp4!gargoyle!sphinx!see1 university of chicago computation center "...and to my Democratic precinct (x9.xes@UChicago.Mailnet) captain, I leave my vote."
