I recommend the booster seat.  We use one with our three year old
(well almost 3, birthday 3/29), and did in the past with our older
kids.  While there is some extra work to use a harness arrangement
in the back seat (in the front, the 3 point lap/shoulder belt is
all that is needed), our kids all could manage the belts/straps
themselves by age 3, and the booster seat comes in handy as a
booster chair at the table when visiting.
