Lines: 47 Dear Jackie Burhans: (March 13, 1985) If you are teaching computer usage (word processing, for example) a software program such as a $1,000 box and an additional $500 which you mentioned might be okay. However, if you are seriously teaching computer technology (including programming) your computer demands hardware modification. The reason hardware modification is essential is that running commercial software, with computers already loaded with software, works only some of the time. The Total Talk is a hardware-modified computer. However, an alternative (for $3,500) is the Frank Audio Data computer with slide controls. These slide controls allow the user to scan the screen, and the device does not interfere with commercial programs. It can be gotten from Maryland Computers. The final alternative (available in the future) is a National Federation of the Blind modification for the IBM PC. Information on this can be gotten from NFB, 1800 Johnson Street, Baltimore, Maryland, 21230. As for your interest in large print displays, Arts Computer Products, Inc., ( 145 Tremont, Suite 407, Boston, MA 02111 ) produces an IBM PC demo disc called "PC Lens" for $25.00 . Please do not hesitate to contact either Bill ( (415) 561-1677 ) or Deborah ( (415) 561-1655 ) for any further information. Cordially, William Gerrey Engineer Deborah Gilden, Ph. D.
