I have come across two types of text files on DOS:  (1) with a control-Z
at eof, and (2) one without a control-Z.

Are you aware of any subroutines for handling the problem
of opening a file for appending, regardless of whether or not there is 
a control-Z.  I will write one of my own, if needed.  But I would rather
use somebody elses 'proven' code.
