The heart is on the left side of the body.  I had heard that in swordfighting,
charging into battle with your right side first protects the heart better
by making it a further away target.  I'm not sure how a shield bears into
this.

I'm not entirely sure of the logistics of this, but it's clear that if
swordfighting on one side protected you better than on the other, 
it could quickly be bred in.
