(The square, for example, is smaller when viewed from one side than when viewed from a corner, since a diagonal is longer than a side.) The implication is that a manhole cover cannot accidentally fall through the manhole and injure someone below, where any other shape could. There's a second reason? I'd guess that it would be that since manhole covers are so heavy, it's easier to roll them than to carry them!
