Sounds a lot like Lloyd Biggle's stuff with Jan Darzek. Darzek is a detective on earth who gets hired by aliens to solve a "problem" (no spoilers) that humans are more adapted to than the aliens. The only thing is that the human race is under quarantine until such time as they can join the galactic federation. There were several books and shorts revolving around that character - _All_the_Colors_of_Darkness_ is the only title I remember. Does anybody out there have a complete list?
