Damned if you do, and damned if you don't.  For the gentleman
who doesn't want to appear presumptuous, but doesn't want to
be irresponsible either, I suggest:

Invite her to your place for the first close encounter.
Keep your condoms in a box underneath the bathroom sink (or in
the back of the closet).  Then you can excuse yourself and dig them
out, muttering, "I know I've got some here somewhere. . ."
This way you look prepared, but give the impression that you're
laid-back about it.  (Dusting them off, however, is a no-no. :-)

The same, I imagine, would work with a diaphragm.  Although
ever since I've had one, I've never had a relationship where
I didn't discuss birth control in advance.
