Determining the time in one's life in which this event occurred only gives a small insight into determining the impact of this important step in forming one's sexual identity. This posting details the results and implications of a survey done in February of 1985. The survey's objective was to gather a broader base of information about one's first experience of sexual intercourse or one's reasons for not having sexual intercourse. This would allow us to determine how significant the single variable of age was in one's perception of first sexual intercourse and also to determine if other variables (previously ignored by researchers) were also significant. Due to the nature of the medium the survey was conducted over, it cannot be claimed that the survey represents a general sample of the North American population. The people who would be reading the survey would likely be professionals or those in training to be professionals (i.e. college and university students). This limits such variables such as social class, income level, developmental background, geographical distribution, and other such variables. The survey elicited 52 responses from people throughout North America. The fact that this is such a small number limits the strength of conclusions reached. Also, the fact that only four females responded also limits generalization. Because of these reasons, the survey results and interpretations should be taken as indicative rather than conclusive. This should be kept in mind when reading the rest of the posting.
