The way I prefer to operate is instead of Dutch, alternate payments and
decisions on where to go.  It divides the expenses based on ability and
willingness to pay, and you learn something about your partner based on
their choice.   ( If your partner clears $1000 after expenses and still
takes you to McDonalds after you go take them to Lutece, that does tell
you something! )

So far, it has worked out OK.
