As for Sarek's pull, this could be helpful to Kirk in ST IV. However, something that comes to mind immediately is the section from "Foundation" where Hober Mallow is on trial for treason -- after shattering the charges, a charged-up mob ousts the mayor in favor of Mallow. This leads me to believe that after Kirk destroys the opposition at the trial, he could believably be put in charge of his own fleet, which leaves him in a perfect position for the upcoming war with the Klingons.
