In 1983 I worked for several months on two farms in Norway.  This was a great
experience, living with the families out in the country.  The work includes
all kinds of farm chores from haying to milking to picking strawberries to
whatever.  You may state a preference for the kind of work you like to do (or
not do) and where in the country you'd like to go.  The sponsoring organization

application processing fee: NOK 175.00 (payment instructions are sent with the

ages 18-30, though they did not seem too strict on this
minimum pay is NOK 250/week, with a maximum of 35 hours of work; other
arrangements may be made between the guest and the farmer

I understand that many other countries have similar programs; try your favorite
consulate.  One strong recommendation: try to learn the language of whatever
country you go to.  Being able to be a part of the conversations around you
will add a lot to the whole experience.  Remember the joke:

	What do you call a person who can speak three languages?  Trilingual.
	What do you call a person who can speak two languages?  Bilingual.
	What do you call a person who can speak one language?  American.
