The licence fee is currently 46 pounds, according to an article which a
British friend sent to me (about the crisis).  The article also quotes
Patrick Troughton (Doctor #2) as saying, "It is possible that the BBC is
hoping there will be a public outcry about the series being too expensive
for its resources."  Colin Baker (the current Doctor) is also quoted as
being "completely astonished" by the move to save cash for other productions
(as Michael Grade put it).

While I'm here, I will also chime in to join the group who say that having
older episodes is not enough.  I will probably see very little DW in the
near future that I have not already seen (i.e. have had shipped from
Chicago on videotape).  Just a punishment for impatience, I suppose!
