The European system lays down the audio as a separate "layer" on the tape at a different magnetic "depth" than the video signal (I'm simplifying here, obviously). It's really quite interesting. This alternative technique was chosen to avoid certain compatibility problems. I'm not sure what VHS does in this situation. --Lauren--
