If the timeout is reached before a login name is completed, getty hangs up the line and terminates. This is mostly intended to prevent accidental or deliberate hogging of phone lines by people who have connected but not signed on, or signed off but not disconnected. It may also help avoid some odd maladies we've seen occasionally on the dialup lines, and an obscure bug in the dialin/dialout code. -t is probably not useful except on dialups. The timeouts on the dialup lines have been set to five minutes. Due to oddities of init(8), this may not take full effect until after backups today. -- Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!henry
