This system was in fact once proposed by anAmerican outfit, just as the first
CDs were beginning to appear. They apparently wanted to manufacture a card
which you would insert into their player, and which would be scanned much
like a tv screen is.

However, since I have not seen any more of this system, I guess that it
died.
