"The Codebreakers" by David S. Kahn was a best-seller some years ago. I have recently seen the original, unabridged hardcover edition in bookstores. This is probably the best way for a beginner to get an idea of what cryptography is about; the unabridged edition explains several cryptanalytic techniques.
