I have found that impromptu weapons are usually only sensible as a last resort (re: you have nothing else available). While car keys may be alright in an emergency, remember that most assailants will protect their eyes. The newspaper seems better for striking and abdominal jabs, but consider what the criminal(s) may be carrying (chains, knives, etc.) and the fact they probably know how to use their "tools" most efficiently. I still think that a firearm is the best way to go, as long as the person does so legally and knows how to use it. It is not only intimidating, but the only sensible way for handling multiple assailants. This is only in situations of self-defense when you feel your life is threatened. I am not condoning vigalantism. By the way, who has the right to tell me that I can or cannot defend myself under circumstances of possible loss of life or potential serious injury from one of these punks?
