You might want to consider for a moment whether they might have more experience with the different connotations that the term has when used by different people. The label 'girl' has become to many people a symbol of the attitude that many men still towards women, mainly that they are inferior and should stay home and make babies (yes, I exaggerate a bit). If you do not believe that many men still hold this view, ask some of the women that you know.
