The problem with the taste of contraceptive jellies like
Ortho-Gynol is that if you put enough on the diaphragm to
do a thorough job of protecting the woman, then it tends
to get all over her labia when the diaphragm is inserted.
Subsequently it ends up all over the tongue of her partner,
if they are doing that kind of thing, and the Ortho-Gynol
tries to do to the man's taste buds what it's supposed
to do to his sperm.  Yechhhh!!
