Very simple.  Symbolism.  It's longer than it's wide.  Freudian.

Society	says: "cover your genitals,	they're unacceptable",
then	says: "wear symbolic genitals,	they're acceptable".

Why?  So that the	natural	differences/superiority may
be replaced with the	arificial symbols of class/power/postition.

Thus the president of the company can look like a stud in his 3-piece-suit
while hiding his foobar mumble,
while the shipping/receiving stud looks like a bozo in his jeans & tshirt
while hiding his bowana wowza, so as not to embarrass the prez.
