On my 780 running 4.2, I sometimes want cron to execute certain shell
scripts under user ids other than root, such as uucp and news. Sometimes
I can do:

	/bin/su news < shell.script

and sometimes I have to do:

	echo shell.script | /bin/su news

Could someone explain this? thanks
