I understand your frustration.  The parts department of a local Chevy 
dealer (if your dealer isn't giving you any satisfaction) should have 
the service manual in stock.  The other alternative is to make a credit 
card order for the manual, there *should* be a phone number listed in 
your owners manual, and have them Federal Express it.

I had a similar problem with my car ('85 Toyota MR2).  I bought a
burglar alarm system and needed the service manual before a friend
(who has an MSEE) could install it, but the dealer didn't have it 
yet (I purchased it in February), nor was it available from the Toyota
Publications distributors yet...  It hadn't arrived from Japan yet!
The service department offered to let me see theirs, as soon as their
copy arrived.  Nice guys! But I have the service manual now, and the 
alarm system is in too.  (You should check installation prices for 
alarm systems if you want to stress-test your pacemaker!)  I'm still
waiting for the detailed electrical systems manual, though.
