The algorithm is by no stretch of the imagination "classified". The Department of Commerce prohibits exportation of many things, including cryptographic systems. Apparently AT&T lawyers have decided not to fight the issue, since they now remove "crypt" etc. from the "international version" of UNIX. This whole issue is pretty silly; another example of your tax dollar being wasted.
