I wouldn't read net.religion, so I don't know who posts there. On the other hand, someone who declared "married" in one or another newsgroups and then posts to net.singles seemed a little weird. I posted it here for two main reasons: to not disrupt the discussions in net.singles with a meta-discussion (and no, I do not think separating singles and marrieds in social situations is a way to better approach single life) and to reach a wider group of possible respondees. I have received a few letters, all of which were pretty nice, explaining reasons to me, which were much more informative than most of the flames I saw here. If I have touched a nerve in Ken or Melanie, it was not because of a "hidden agenda". A partial summary of the letters: There might be those who will be returning to the single status. Most of the content is actually of appeal to a wider audience and would be more appropriately located in net.social. Both of these reasons make good sense to me, much better than any declaration such as "Nobody should/can be prevented from posting to net.anywhere." Any idiot can see that, and that was not my question. There is a problem, though, in that those who would wish to discuss positive aspects of their sect or sex or sexual preference without being questioned negatively. Reinterpreting the name of the newsgroup with the public nature of newsgroups will, of course, remind one why this does occur; lately this has led to moderated newsgroups or mailing lists to aid in the privacy of the discussion (and sometimes to aid the privacy of the participants). + + + Posting to net.flame has its advantages--a possibly flammable topic can be broached in a newsgroup that can handle anything, and yet reasonable replies can result.
