Another reasonably good way to deal with trappers/lurkers/purple worms
is to read a scroll of confuse monster and then swing away with your
crysknife. The confusion apparently slows (or stops) the digestive
process, giving you time to cut your way out.

P.S. Experienced hackers know another to get out of the trappers that
     needs no magic item.
