(Notes: anything in square brackets [] is added by me, the rest is as it appeared in the playbill. Quoted additions are song titles.) --------------------------------------------------------------- This year the Hasty Pudding Theatricals takes you back to those rosy days of yore, when men were men, and women were witches - days when a group of morally conscious Puritans, determined to rid the world once and for all of undesirable elements, armed themsleves with sotcks and bonds and set off to pursue their goal of a witch-free society ["We've Got a Lot at Stake".] Led by the deadly Mandy Torpedoes and the ebullient Mayor John Overflow [and including Pastor Pryme and Judge Mental], the Puritans plan their attack on a group of recently escaped wanton women who have just established, on the Cape Cod coast, an ultramodern entertainment comples called the Mortal's Inn. Meanwhile, in the Mortal's Inn, the women, led by the voracious Anita Mann [including Mona Lott, Sharon Sharalike, Eileen Dover, and Auntie Histamine] are putting the finishing touches on their grand opening ["Mortal's Inn Boogie"] Amos Behavin, a Puritan priest in training, along with [the two waifs] Joe Mamma and Stan Byerman, infiltrate the nightclub in disguise to spy and to seek proof of the women's witchliness. Instead, Amos falls madly in love with the supremely innocent Alice Fairinlove, and bemoans his dilemma of staying true to the church or to the bewitching Alice ["Crystal Ball"]. Things up in Heaven soon become immersed in the Earthly existential dilemma as the Angel Alexis Position (the heavenly sister of Missionary Position), grants the devilish Lou Suffer parole. ["Devil Without a Cause"] Fighting off his advances as well as her nausea for his tacky outfits, Alexis decides instead to go down to Earth to investigate the Puritans' charge of witchery. The ever persistent Lou secretly decides to follow her. [ Meanwhile, the Puritans begin the anticipate a Witch-free world ("Witch and Famous") and as Anita and the girls celebrate the opening of the Mortal's Inn ("Write me a Letter") prepare for the confrontation ("A Witch is a Terrible Thing to Waste") ] What happens next is anyone's guess as tempers and libidoes flare. Will Brotherhood and Equaminity vanquish Prejudice and Greed? [yes] Will Love have to take a backseat to Piety? [of course] What do these metaphysical terms mean anyway? [Beats me] There's only one way to find out and this isn't it - but relax, it promises to be a hell of a lot more fun than Jerry Falwell. -- Craig Werner !philabs!aecom!werner What do you expect?
