It has to do with the woman's diet, making her body more or less alkaline. I don't know the details, but I was fortunate enough for my wife to have had 2 boys. A couple that I know that read the book and tried it, wanted a boy first and had one. They wanted a girl second and had a boy. I don't know if they continued to try to determine the sex of the third, but they did finally have a girl.
