Normally I don't comment on unreleased software, but in this case I wouldn't want anyone to lose any sleep over this issue. All the versions of the "new" Finder that I have used let you place icons on the desktop, and I don't expect this to change. (Perhaps the "reliable" source was referring to some other program that also uses icons.
