I guess there is not accounting for taste, but the song was done by Janis Joplin, and was intended as serious commentary on American materialism and lack of intellectual stimulation. While I don't remember all the words it ran something like this: And now for a song of great social import: Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz? All my friends have got Porsches I must make amends, Work hard all my life no help from my friends, Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz? Oh Lord won't you buy me a color TV? Dialing for dollars is trying to find me, I wait for the telephone each day until three, Oh Lord won't you buy me a color TV? Oh Lord won't you buy me a night on the town (at this point memory fails me) Strangely, this has always been one of my favorite songs. David Esan (!moscom!de)
