Most of the time on a first date I haven't known about this, at least I didn't know if the other party would want to or not. But it's still a neat suggestion. I feel pretty uncomfortable if I don't pay my share when eating out. When I was a poor student, I didn't like being taken out by anyone, and if I was going to go out with close friends to the local Szechuan all-you-can-hold buffet, we arranged money matters ahead of time and didn't go if it was going to make someone uncomfortable about not paying; and when going out with people who could afford it, I felt much happier if I could contribute and so felt much, much better cooking something than being taken out. Of course, who can resist being taken out for your birthday! Or taking someone out! For all those reasons for celebrating, like birthdays and anniversaries, or landing/leaving that wonderful/awful new/old job, yours or the other person(s)'s. Or cooking something at home, too. And for those of us who can't cook, or are too nervous to try it, or don't have the time, well, there are places that will provide you with gourmet meals for two, from soup to nuts (that is, the whole meal). There was an article on such places locally in the Boston Globe recently, and the prices while more than Burger King can still be in the reasonable range for those who can afford to eat out. They probably prefer a day's notice. This might be the perfect thing if you want to and can make the someone comfortable in your lair--a leisurely meal, not in a bustling restaurant, and still no pots to scour (-: of course, you might want to grubby up some pots if you want to give the illusion that you participated in the food preparation :-). ...decwrl!dec-rhea!dec-amber!chabot chabot%amber.DEC@decwrl.ARPA USFail: DEC, MR03-1/K20, 2 Iron Way, Marlborough, MA 01752
