My normal work uniform is jeans and a t-shirt, but there's
occasional meetings for which I'll wear a tie.  I found that
several women whom I frequently pass in the halls, usually
with just a quick, mutual "hi", will stop me when they see
me in full battle dress for a much longer chat, often beginning
with "I haven't seen you in a long time."  At first I refused
to believe the tie had anything to do with it, but subsequent
wearings (including once just for the hell of it--I had half
the floor thinking I'd gotten promoted) have borne out this
phenomenon.  These are women who themselves dress informally
but quite tastefully (I guess--I'm still a hippie and not really
up on these things), with whom I have little in common and, alas,
less to say.

Incidentally, that time I did dress to the nines (well, more like
the sevens--where did that expression come from anyway?) I did
it because I'd been very depressed for several days, and I was
feeling like my personal borders were getting fuzzy.  It really
helped me out of the rut, and answering all the queries about
what the tie was for with "Oh, no reason" and a sh*t-eating grin
was a lot of fun.  And then, when I got home that evening, taking
the damn thing off felt even better.  Anyway, I recommend a day's
sharp dressing to anyone with similar symptoms (and a usual, more
slovenly demeanor).  Sharpens the old borders right up!
