In Star Trek 16 (the DC comic book), Kirk gets out of his jam by
leaking information to the press about his exploits (which involve
saving the Federation from an invasion from the 'Mirror Mirror' Universe.)
(He gets command of the Excelsior, and Spock gets a command of his own as well)

Perhaps a similar scheme is planned for the movie, as Harve Bennett and Mike
Barr, the editor of the comic book, consult each other regularly.
