How, you ask? Well, picture this. A closed, off-the-record meeting with Admiral Turner. (The following is dialogue from the DC comic.) Kirk: I never wanted the limelight, Admiral. All I ever wanted was a ship of my own. I never wanted the promotion to Admiral, but you forced it on me! If you really want me out of your hair Admiral.. then GIVE ME A SHIP! Turner: A ship, eh... Kirk, I think that can be arranged...! Turner to HQ: Effective immediately, Admiral James T. Kirk is assigned to the USS Excelsior -- as commanding officer. Kirk (dazed): Your best ship...? Turner: "Best ship?" Kirk, you've disabled that tub at least TWICE and god knows what ELSE is wrong with it! Your job is to work the bugs out that thing and make it a fit prototype for the rest of the fleet. Food for thought. It is pretty sad when you can disable a heavy cruiser (or whatever class Excelsior is) by taking out/swapping a handful of components. Ray Chen princeton!tilt!chenr
