If you hit something and the car still continues moving, then the chances that you retain control and don't go swerving into the opposite lane or such-like activity are greatly reduced if you are wearing a seatbelt. As well, getting killed or worse is really expensive to the rest of us. We have to try to patch up after the person (and if you have a medi-care system, we *all* pay for the person's stupidity.)
