The Italian pump shotguns are particularily nice for home defense:

	FIE SPAS 12 Pump/Auto Shotgun
	Guage: 12, 2-3/4" chamber

	Stock: folding, metal
	sights: blade front, aperture rear
	Features: Pump OR gas operated auto. 9 shot mag. Parkerized alloy

		by FIE.
	Cost: $599

Perhaps a Colt M1911 for a handgun.  .45 cartridge has extreme stopping power
	low velocity means limited range (you won't go blowing away the
	neighbors) as compared to 9mm.  Size, weight, and limited magazine
	size unimportant for home defense.  Go for the government model.
