I know of someone here in New York who carries a telephone receiver
with that little twisty wire those things come with just hanging 
off it. Sound strange?  You bet it is. When the situation
gets threatening, she pulls this thing out of her purse or pocket
and starts talking into it. The theory being that even the
criminal element does not like to screw around with crazy people.
Reports are it works.
